Jordan Winery
Healdsburg, California
1978
The Jordan Winery, constructed between 1978 and 1980, is a major winery
located in the Alexander Valley, Sonoma County. The winery development
includes the owners' residential suites and public reception rooms.
A phasing plan allows for the addition of a country inn at some time
in the future. The winery was developed as a French country estate
in the traditional Bordeaux style. The landscape architectural challenge
was to provide a link between the refined geometric forms of the winery
structure and the oak woodland of the California hills. The spatial
sequence which has been developed from the winery entrance up to the
winery structure aids in making this transition. The formal grounds
consist of terraces defined by clipped hedges with allees and parterres.
The gardens and terraces not only serve private residential use, but
also accommodate large public gatherings. In addition, the grounds
serve the functional requirements of a modern winery operation. The
master plan for the complex was developed to ultimately include a
private residence, tennis courts, a pool, an extensive vegetable garden,
and trails covering approximately 100 acres.
