Swan Road Recreation
Corridor
Tucson, Arizona
This 3 mile scenic
corridor through the Catalina Mountain foothills that fits seamlessly
through the rugged Sonoran Desert and has become a favorite landmark
parkway for Tucson residents. This project was the first application
of precast artificial rock to be used in road construction project
in the United States. Rubber molds from existing formations were pressed
into concrete and painted to match the formations.Existing saguaros
and cactus plants were moved and placed in planters (some up to 15'
in walls) to revegetate road cuts and fills. A bike and pedestrian
corridors connect neighborhoods to the parkway and the Santa Cruz
River Park. In addition to increasing property values a large portion
desert habitat has been preserved.
Cost of construction
$5 Millon.
