Swan Road Recreation Corridor

This 3 mile scenic corridor through the Catalina Mountain foothills that fits seamlessly through the rugged Sonoran Desert and has become a favorite landmark parkway for Tucson residents. This project was the first application of precast artificial rock to be used in road construction project in the United States. Rubber molds from existing formations were pressed into concrete and painted to match the formations.Existing saguaros and cactus plants were moved and placed in planters (some up to 15' in walls) to revegetate road cuts and fills. A bike and pedestrian corridors connect neighborhoods to the parkway and the Santa Cruz River Park. In addition to increasing property values a large portion desert habitat has been preserved.
